Question 1

Question 6

Question 4

Se7en viewer statistics

Layer Cake viewer statistics

The main target audience for my film is males between the ages of 18-29. These user ratings from IMDB show that both films scored most highly in that target demographic & with enough votes to show that a lot of people shared the same positive views on the movies. However, the film does have another smaller target audience in the form of the 30-44 year old male demographic. My film takes great inspiration from films such as Layer Cake & Se7en & the plot devices used in these films also appear in mine. These plot devices add a level of complexity & deepen the plot in a way which appeals to an older more intellectual audience.

Both films also scored high ratings with female audiences but there was less votes from them.

Although both films are thrillers, Se7en has a much darker tone to it, where as Layer Cake is more typical of a British gangster film. My film is a mixture of both, it has dark gritty elements to it but also features traits which are typical of British gangster films, this shows that it would appeal to the audiences of both these films.

Audience Profile

Tom
This is Tom. Tom is a 23 year old British man who lives an everyday life. Tom works a 9-5 job at a local office & lives a comfortable life. When Tom gets home from work one of his favourite past times is watching movies, sometimes he goes to the cinema to watch new releases, but his favourite way to watch films is through Netflix. Tom is a huge fan of the thriller genre & in particular British gangster films such as Layer Cake & Green Street but he also has a love for psychological thrillers. Tom isn't too keen on popular culture & instead likes to have his own interests instead of "following the crowd". Tom would like my film as it is part of his favourite sub-genre, my film takes the British gangster genre & then adds a layer of psychological thriller to it, the perfect film for someone like Tom! One of Tom's other hobbies is gaming & in particular games like Grand Theft Auto.

Toms love of British gangster films & criminality based video games comes from his desire to live a more exciting life. He is content with his work & lifestyle but always likes to imagine himself in the role of the criminals as it is exciting & acts as a getaway from boring everyday life. Tom studied psychology as one of his A levels, he enjoys trying to dissect the psyche of the characters in the films and try & work out the plot before it happens.

Because Tom watches the majority of his films through Netflix he isn't worried about seeing big budget mainstream thrillers & actually really enjoys watching more low budget independent films as he enjoys the different unorthodox & unique approaches to thriller genre. This means he would enjoy my film as it tackles the thriller genre in a unique way.

Question 5

Question 3

Which film company is most likely to distribute my film?

With my film being a gritty, realistic, stylised film I feel as if it would be better suited for one of the UK based distribution companies which has a history of achieving success with low budget independent British films.

Polygram was my first option, they have distributed films from the British gangster genre before such as Lock,Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. They have also distributed dark gritty films such as Trainspotting. At first Polygram seemed like the perfect company, they have a history of distributing films similar to mine & they are based in England. However, through extensive research I found that Polygram is as focused on low budget films as I previously thought & that their actually a pretty large global distribution company, this made me decide to go for a smaller distribution company

Vertigo Films is the company I settled on for distributing my film. The company is known for distributing independent, low budget, dark, gritty, stylised films. A perfect match for my film. Although the don't have as large of a distribution network as the other companies, the audience of their films coincides with mine & because of this I think Vertigo Films distributing my film would bring it the most possible success.

How could digital technologies offer new distribution opportunities

With the advance in digital technologies, there has been a rise in the different number of ways in which films can be distributed. Netflix is now a household name & digital streaming services are taking the film world by storm. By having services such as Netflix, a new market has been opened up, those who want to watch films but don't want to go to the cinema. With Netflix people are more likely to watch films they wouldn't see in the cinema, people take more chances with the films they will watch on Netflix because if they don't enjoy it the only thing they have lost is there time. New digital technologies helps more niche films with a smaller target audience reach a large audience &  this brings more success to smaller independent films.
